Most poured foundations crack a little as concrete cures. That does not mean the house is failing. The useful question is whether a crack looks like normal shrinkage — or like settlement, lateral pressure, or active movement that needs a pro.

Industry rule of thumb often cited for “worth a closer look”: cracks about 1/8 inch (~3 mm) and wider. Trade and contractor guides commonly attribute that threshold to consensus practice informed by concrete crack-width guidance (for example ACI 224R discussion of service-load crack widths). Treat it as a planning cue, not a legal pass/fail.

Hairline cracks: usually cosmetic, still worth watching

Hairline cracks are typically thinner than about 1/16 inch — roughly cardstock or a credit-card edge. On poured walls they often show up in the first year or two as concrete loses moisture and shrinks. The National Association of Home Builders and many inspectors describe these as common and often negligible when they stay thin, vertical, dry, and flush.

They can still let water or soil gas in. If a hairline crack weeps after rain, sealing (often flexible polyurethane injection for non-structural leaks) can make sense even when the wall itself is not failing.

Vertical

Angles of roughly 30–75°, or stair-steps along mortar joints in block or brick, often track differential settlement: one part of the foundation moving differently than another. Width plus growth over time decides urgency.

Horizontal

Horizontal cracks in basement walls are the pattern to take seriously. They often signal soil or water pressure pushing the wall inward (bowing). Contractor literature and damage-assessment guidance treat horizontal cracking as a structural red flag long before FEMA-scale “major damage” widths. Get an independent structural opinion early.

How to measure and monitor at home

  1. Photograph the crack with a ruler or coin for scale.
  2. Pencil-mark both ends and the widest point; write the date and measured width on the wall or in a note.
  3. Run a finger across the crack. A sharp ledge (one side proud or dropped) is offset — more concerning than a flush hairline of the same width.
  4. Recheck after seasonal swings (especially freeze–thaw and wet springs), or every 3–6 months.
  5. If width grows meaningfully (for example past ~1/16 inch of new opening in a few months), or new companion cracks appear, escalate to a pro.

Those “sympathy symptoms” do not prove foundation failure by themselves, but together with a wide, offset, or horizontal crack they justify skipping DIY and getting documented assessments.
